Understanding Bacteriophage Specificity in Natural Microbial Communities

Studying the coevolutionary dynamics between bacteria and the bacteriophage viruses that infect them is critical to understanding both microbial diversity and ecosystem functioning. Phages can play a key role in shaping bacterial population dynamics and can significantly alter both intra- and inter-specific competition among bacterial hosts. Predicting how phages might influence community stabi...

Network analyses structure genetic diversity in independent genetic worlds.

DNA flows between chromosomes and mobile elements, following rules that are poorly understood. This limited knowledge is partly explained by the limits of current approaches to study the structure and evolution of genetic diversity. Network analyses of 119,381 homologous DNA families, sampled from 111 cellular genomes and from 165,529 phage, plasmid, and environmental virome sequences, offer ch...

The capsid of the T4 phage superfamily: the evolution, diversity, and structure of some of the most prevalent proteins in the biosphere.

The Escherichia coli bacteriophage T4 has served as a classic system in phage biology for more than 60 years. Only recently have phylogenetic analyses and genomic comparisons demonstrated the existence of a large, diverse, and widespread superfamily of T4-like phages in the environment. We report here on the T4-like major capsid protein (MCP) sequences that were obtained by targeted polymerase ...

Parasite diversity drives rapid host dynamics and evolution of resistance in a bacteria‐phage system

Host-parasite evolutionary interactions are typically considered in a pairwise species framework. However, natural infections frequently involve multiple parasites. Altering parasite diversity alters ecological and evolutionary dynamics as parasites compete and hosts resist multiple infection. We investigated the effects of parasite diversity on host-parasite population dynamics and evolution u...

The complete genomes and proteomes of 27 Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophages.

Bacteriophages are the most abundant life forms in the biosphere. They play important roles in bacterial ecology, evolution, adaptation to new environments, and pathogenesis of human bacterial infections. Here, we report the complete genomic sequences, and predicted proteins of 27 bacteriophages of the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Comparative nucleotide and protein sequence an...
